Learning Strategies
Learning strategies help us in our everyday lives. We are constantly encountering new information and our brain processes that new information in different ways. If it uses the right strategy, the new information is retained and stored in the long-term memory. If the right strategy isn't used, typically the brain sees the information as confusing and doesn't process it correctly and the information is soon forgotten. Many of the strategies we use can be applied to a variety of learning opportunities. They are flexible, which is great! This flexibility means that we don't have to learn every strategy out there, we just have to know enough of them so that we can apply them accurately to new learning.
Learning strategies can be divided into different categories. These categories are used because not all learning happens at the same rate or on the same level. Sometimes in order to learn something at all, our brain has to make sense of it first. Simple strategies can help us develop deeper meaning which allows for greater understanding.

Parent Info
Parents, these strategies are ones that will be explicitly taught to your children. They will have the opportunity to practice and receive feedback on their use in the classroom. The more they can practice, the more effective they will be in using these strategies to support their learning. These links are here so that your children can access them as many times as needed. Sometimes a quick review is all that is needed to apply a strategy correctly. You are welcome to view them as well. You can support your child by encouraging their use when encountering new or confusing information.
